Users Stopping Slimming Jabs Gain Back Weight Four Times Faster Than Dieters

Obesity treatment involves ongoing approaches.

A recent study indicates that people who stop using new weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on shed pounds much more quickly than those who stop conventional diet and exercise regimens.

Published data in a major medical journal demonstrates that while overweight people can lose a large proportion of their body weight while on the medication, the mass returns at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.

"Users purchasing these treatments need to be cognizant of the danger of fast rebound weight gain when the treatment ends," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of regain implies a return to original mass in about 18 months.

Weighing Treatments

The study, which reviewed 37 of trials involving thousands of participants, compared the effects of the injectable medications with other pills.

Researchers point out that individuals who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone generally see a slower weight regain—around 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.

Understanding the Quick Rebound

Doctors believe the way of the drugs explains the heightened regain.

These medications copy a natural hormone called GLP-1, which controls appetite.

"Long-term administration of the hormone concentrations several times higher than normal could lead to the body to produce less of its own natural hormone, and could lessen responsiveness to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.

"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' results in hunger is unsuppressed, making binge eating far more likely."

A Lifelong Issue?

Medical guidelines advise the injections for people with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.

A number of clinicians argue that, due to the likelihood of relapse, the therapy should be considered ongoing.

This perspective is echoed by drug manufacturers, who say that the results "underscore the long-term character of excess weight," akin to managing diseases like diabetes.

User Testimonies

Individuals who have stopped the medication describe a sudden resurgence of hunger.

"It felt as if something flipping and you're instantly starving," described a patient.

This difficulty is worsened if individuals have not established sustainable lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.

Significant Interest

Survey data indicate that millions of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with desire being substantial.

  • Use is greater among women compared to males.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest level of interest.
  • A large proportion obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Ultimately, experts stress that while GLP-1 drugs are effective agents for shedding pounds, they are not a magic solution and maintained weight loss hinges on ongoing lifestyle support.
