UN Lifts Sanctions on President of Syria Ahead of Presidential Visit

Placeholder Syrian President

Security Council representatives voted in favour to a US resolution to lift sanctions on Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa ahead of his White House visit the following week.

He became transitional president subsequent to commanding an insurgent campaign that ousted the former president in the final month of 2024, concluding 13 years of civil war.

The US representative Mike Waltz at the United Nations stated the United Nations delivered "an emphatic political statement" that acknowledged Syria entered "a new era" since Assad was deposed.

Previously, he faced global penalties as the leader of the Islamist group the HTS movement, once connected to the extremist organization. The US removed the organization from the catalog of global extremist entities in July.

Additional Sanctions Relief

The UN also removed sanctions on Syrian Interior Minister Minister Anas Khattab.

The Syrian diplomatic chief applauded the lifting of the penalties, posting on social media: "Syrian officials convey thanks toward America and allied countries for their support the Syrian nation and citizens."

Imminent Washington Talks

President Sharaa's presidential meeting this coming Monday comes after American leader Donald Trump stated the Middle Eastern president achieved "significant advancement" towards bringing peace to the war-torn country.

After the meeting, Trump said Sharaa had "a legitimate chance for national reconciliation".

The two leaders convened for the first time this past May, when Trump visited Riyadh on a tour of Arab nations.

Subsequent to that discussion, America's leader characterized the Syrian as a "strong individual" having a "formative history".

His Islamist group HTS served as al-Qaeda's branch in Syria prior to breaking relations back in 2016.

Earlier American Trip

Monday's visit is not Sharaa's first trip to the US in the current year. This past fall, he became the pioneering Middle Eastern head of state to address the global assembly in Manhattan for nearly six decades.

In his speech, he said Syria was "restoring its proper position within the global community" while showing support with Palestinian citizens in Gaza.
