Oklahoma City Thunder Begin Championship Defense with Nail-Biting Overtime Triumph

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander in action

The Thunder star came to Oklahoma City back in 2019.

The Thunder's star player scored the winning baskets deep into double overtime as the Oklahoma City Thunder opened their NBA title defense with a narrow win over the visiting Rockets.

Last season's MVP poured in 35 points, including two clutch free throws with just 2.3 seconds remaining in double OT, securing the champions a positive start.

Houston's Alperun Sengun led all scorers with a game-high 39 and also connected on a personal-best five shots from beyond the arc.

But Chet Holmgren, who contributed 28 points, played a major role together with match-winner Gilgeous-Alexander.

"Grit and defense," SGA said of their showing. "We know that when we execute on defence we give ourselves a chance no matter what's going on—makes, misses, fortune or misfortune. We did sufficient defensive work to get the win. We're pretty rusty, but it's a positive beginning."

Prior to the tip-off, Oklahoma's championship banner was unveiled at their home court, while the players were presented with their championship rings.

Oklahoma City beat the Pacers in last season's championship series. It was their first title since the team moved in 2008 to Oklahoma City from Seattle, who had won the 1979 title.

Indiana will have the opportunity to get some early revenge on this Friday when they face Oklahoma, while the Houston are back on court on the identical day at the Pistons.

Elsewhere, a huge effort of 43 points, 12 rebounds and nine dimes from Luka Doncic was not enough to prevent his new team the Lakers from suffering a 119-109 defeat against the Warriors.

Jimmy Butler scored 31 points and Stephen Curry chipped in 23 for the visiting Warriors.

The Lakers were missing the NBA's all-time leading scorer James as he recovers from a back issue.
