‘It appears magical’: does light therapy actually deliver clearer skin, healthier teeth, and more resilient joints?

Light therapy is definitely experiencing a surge in popularity. There are now available illuminated devices targeting issues like dermatological concerns and fine lines to muscle pain and oral inflammation, recently introduced is a toothbrush enhanced with small red light diodes, described by its makers as “a breakthrough in personal mouth health.” Worldwide, the industry reached $1 billion in 2024 and is forecast to expand to $1.8 billion by 2035. You can even go and sit in an infrared sauna, which use infrared light to warm the body directly, the thermal energy targets your tissues immediately. As claimed by enthusiasts, it feels similar to a full-body light therapy session, stimulating skin elasticity, soothing sore muscles, alleviating inflammatory responses and long-term ailments as well as supporting brain health.

The Science and Skepticism

“It appears somewhat mystical,” says a Durham University professor, a scientist who has studied phototherapy extensively. Of course, some of light’s effects on our bodies are well established. Sunlight enables vitamin D production, crucial for strong bones, immune defense, and tissue repair. Light exposure controls our sleep-wake cycles, additionally, activating brain chemicals and hormonal responses in daylight, and winding down bodily functions for sleep as it fades into night. Artificial sun lamps are a common remedy for people with seasonal affective disorder (Sad) to combat seasonal emotional slumps. Undoubtedly, light plays a vital role in human health.

Various Phototherapy Approaches

While Sad lamps tend to use a mixture of light frequencies from the blue end of the spectrum, most other light therapy devices deploy red or infrared light. During advanced medical investigations, like examinations of infrared influence on cerebral tissue, determining the precise frequency is essential. Light is a form of electromagnetic radiation, extending from long-wavelength radiation to high-energy gamma radiation. Phototherapy, or light therapy utilizes intermediate light frequencies, the highest energy of those being invisible ultraviolet, then visible light (all the colours we see in a rainbow) and then infrared (which we can see with night-vision goggles).

Ultraviolet treatment has been employed by skin specialists for decades to manage persistent skin disorders including eczema and psoriasis. Most importantly, the light sources are adjusted by technical experts, “to guarantee appropriate wavelength emission – different from beauty salons, where regulations may be lax, and emission spectra aren’t confirmed.”

Commercial Products and Research Limitations

Red and blue light sources, he notes, “aren’t really used in the medical sense, but they may help with certain conditions.” Red wavelength therapy, proponents claim, enhance blood flow, oxygen uptake and dermal rejuvenation, and stimulate collagen production – a key aspiration in anti-ageing effects. “The evidence is there,” comments the expert. “However, it’s limited.” Regardless, with numerous products on the market, “it’s unclear if device outputs match study parameters. We don’t know the duration, proper positioning requirements, if benefits outweigh potential risks. Many uncertainties remain.”

Treatment Areas and Specialist Views

Initial blue-light devices addressed acne bacteria, microorganisms connected to breakouts. The evidence for its efficacy isn’t strong enough for it to be routinely prescribed by doctors – even though, notes the dermatologist, “it’s commonly used in cosmetic clinics.” Some of his patients use it as part of their routine, he observes, but if they’re buying a device for home use, “we recommend careful testing and security confirmation. Without proper medical classification, standards are somewhat unclear.”

Cutting-Edge Studies and Biological Processes

Simultaneously, in innovative scientific domains, scientists have been studying cerebral tissue, revealing various pathways for light-enhanced cell function. “Pretty much everything I did with the light at that particular wavelength was positive and protective,” he says. It is partly these many and varied positive effects on cellular health that have driven skepticism about light therapy – that claims seem exaggerated. Yet, experimental evidence has transformed his viewpoint.

The researcher primarily focuses on pharmaceutical solutions for brain disorders, though twenty years earlier, a physician creating light-based cold sore therapy requested his biological knowledge. “He developed equipment for cellular and insect experiments,” he recalls. “I was pretty sceptical. It was an unusual wavelength of about 1070 nanometres, which most thought had no biological effect.”

What it did have going for it, nevertheless, was that it travelled through water easily, enabling deeper tissue penetration.

Cellular Energy and Neurological Benefits

Additional research indicated infrared affected cellular mitochondria. These organelles generate cellular energy, generating energy for them to function. “All human cells contain mitochondria, even within brain tissue,” explains the neuroscientist, who concentrated on cerebral applications. “Research confirms improved brain blood flow with phototherapy, which is consistently beneficial.”

With specific frequency application, energy organelles generate minimal reactive oxygen compounds. In low doses this substance, says Chazot, “activates protective proteins that safeguard mitochondria, preserve cell function and eliminate damaged proteins.”

These processes show potential for neurological conditions: free radical neutralization, inflammation reduction, and cellular cleanup – autophagy being the process the cell uses to clear unwanted damaging proteins.
