Historical Information
Mr Comey was the FBI Director from 2013 to 2017 and was fired about several months into Donald Trump's first term as president. At the time, the director was leading an investigation into foreign election meddling and whether there were any links between Russia and the presidential campaign.
During his tenure, Mr Comey triggered a counter-response from Democrats when he announced just days before the national vote that he was investigating Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton's use of a non-governmental email account. Charges against Clinton were not pursued, causing criticism from conservative politicians as well.
Present Charges
Prosecutors assert Mr Comey gave untrue statements to the legislature during a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing in September 2020 when he was being interrogated about both the email probe as well as the election interference investigation. They claim he deceived the legislative body by stating he had not authorized someone at the FBI to disclose to journalistic entities information about the agency probes.
Legal representatives also accuse Mr Comey of "corruptly endeavoring to sway, obstruct and slow" the committee by giving misleading testimony to it.
